Storage and Packing

Tips
.

At Oakham Self Storage we have compiled packing and storage tips to help you with every step of the storage process.

Never overload boxes!
  • Remember someone has to carry them and that someone could be you!
  • If you do not overload, then this should keep the box in shape making it more stable and it will make better use of your overall space.
  • Put heavier items at the bottom of a box and lighter on top.
Box sizes
  • Use smaller boxes for heavier items such as books and the larger cardboard boxes for blankets, cushions etc.
Labelling
  • Label all of your boxes clearly in block letters in a large marker pen and make it clear which side is up.
  • Keep a list of these boxes and their whereabouts in your unit. You may have to retrieve one box and it will save you time and effort to find it.
  • Mark any boxes with FRAGILE if you do not want the contents damaged. Someone else may help you fill or empty your unit.
Boxes and Tape
  • Use good quality tape and boxes. Tape your boxes securely to prevent any mishaps.
  • Us Boxes with a hanging rail for clothes you like. It gives room to breath and keeps them looking great.
Plastic Bags
  • Try not to use these. They can easily get ripped and they do not allow any ventilation when tied which may create mildew issues for your goods.
Larger items
  • With bulkier items then you may be able to break them down to make better use of your unit. Make sure any bolts or screws are carefully labelled and kept tith the item so that they do not get lost.
Packing the Unit
  • Put items you are sure you are not going to need for a while towards the back and bottom of your unit.
  • Leave a path down the middle for easy access.
  • Leave frequently used or needed items towards the front or top.
  • Put heavier items at the bottom and lighter on the top.
  • Do not stretch to stack boxes up high. Use a safe and secure platform to stand on.
  • Give a little space to allow for air flow between boxes.
  • Cover mattresses etc. to give extra protection.
  • You must drain the fuel tanks of lawnmowers or other items to prevent fumes and for safety.
